13A – Reading Reflection No. 1

THE WRIGHT BROTHERS

I read about the Wright brothers and their long path to success in the field of aviation. It took them ten years, an imaginative brother and a brother with great leadership skills. What surprised me the most about this reading was that they got rejected by the United States. They were very patriotic and wanted to sell their invention to their own country yet they could not even get a reply after they reached out. Many of their critics said that man simply was not meant to fly. I think this struck me as shocking because with such a great invention that spiraled the aviation world, it should have turned more heads and had more supporters. I admired how tenacious they were in the span of 10 years. I also really liked how Wilbur was highly imaginative and was the one whose curious mind sparked the project. Something that caught me off guard was how different both brothers were, one very serious and the other a little more laid back. This kind of juxtaposition worked in their favor as they worked together to bring on a new era. The brothers gained more skeptics than followers, one being their own country. That did not stop them, they turned to France who welcomed the idea and made it flourish, silencing all their past critics.
I think their major competencies was how each brother attained skills that complemented each other. They would not have been able to get so far on their own. I think something that confused me the most was that during their time of developing their ideas, the times were filled with innovation and welcomed new skills. Under Teddy Roosevelt's leadership the country was taking on new and exciting projects such as the Panama Canal. This is what confuses me, why was their not more supporters or sponsors to help the Wright brothers. Perhaps, their invention was way out of the scope of the average americans imagination and comprehension.
I would want to ask the Wright Brothers if they every doubted their ability. I want to know if they sat with the idea for a while, too scared to bring it to light because of how absurd it would sound to the public. And when they decided it was time to at upon it rather than leaving it in their imagination. I think a lot of times we struggle with pursuing dreams that are too crazy because we are scared of looking insane. I think the Wright brothers valued their work but also valued their morals and taking breaks. They were extremely faithful and never worked on Sundays which shows that they had a grand idea and were willing to go through years of trial and error; but they also valued each other and would not let their work prioritize their faith.

  1. Fabiana, I really enjoyed hearing everything you learned about the Wright Brothers. The fact that the United States rejected them is very astonishing and surprising to hear. Another aspect that was very interesting was that the brothers were very different, and I liked how you explained what made each one unique when describing their competencies. One thing I liked seeing was that they believed in their idea at times when most people would have given up. For me, belief in yourself and your abilities, is what will guide people to success. Overall, I thought you had great insight that was very helpful!

  2. Hey Fabiana,
I absolutely love the story of Wright brothers I think it is a great entrepreneurial story and very motivational. I like the amount of detail you went into especially depicting each brother and highlighting their differences. My favorite part is that the United States rejected them but they did not let that stop them they continued to move forward and all their hard work paid off .
